In the winter several of us get chapped hands. The backs of our hands get red, the skin cracks and bleeds and they just hurt. Of course, having them in water doesn’t help but I am not willing to tell the kids that they can’t do dishes any more (aww)

There are a few hints that can clear chapped hands up quickly, and help prevent it in the future.

Try to keep them dry

When you wash use a very mild soap, not antibacterial! It may be just us but we have to be careful of the soap and dish soaps we use here at the house. Even Ivory will leave our hands chapped, cracked, and dry. We use an organic goat milk soap for washing and Dr. bronners or Seventh Generation for cleaning.

Use lotion! The best thing I have found is organi, virgin coconut oil…it is antibacterial, anti fungal, healing…and it works. If your hands are chapped cover them with a coating of it and wear mittens to bed. Next morning you will be amazed at how much they have improved!

If you live in an old house and you have nail holes or other small holes in the wood there is an all natural way to fill the hole, especially if you plan on staining it. The problem with alot of wood putty is that it is non-porous and when you go to stain it the stain runs right off.

To get around that take fine sawdust and add just enough Elmer’s glue to make a thick paste. If you use to o much glue it won’t take the stain. FIll the hole with the paste and let it dry. Sand it smooth and then stain right over it…it will magically disappear.

How cool is that?

Maca is a South American root that is said to be good for your whole body. It is supposed to give you energy, stamina, build your immune system and clean your oven while you sleep….Maybe not clean your oven. I was seeing if you were paying attention.

The question is, Does it work? and if it does, are there any side effects?

Like almost any herb your results are going ot vary. When I was workignout I used to drop a dropperful of tincture of Maca in my mouth. I felt an instant buzz (where id I put that bottle, hmmm….) and I do think that it helped with my overall stamina. I tend to go until I drop so it is hard for me to say for sure what benefit I was getting from it. It did not make me feel like i was taking speed…but just a bit of a lift. There is no jittery feeling or heart racing and it does not have caffeine.

It supposedly heightens the libido but I did not see a difference there either, for which my husband is forever grateful. SInce it is high anyway this may not have been something I noticed. In clinical tests men who took it did have somewhat higher libidos than men who did not after the initial 8 week period.

There are no known side effects or drug interactions and Maca is not expensive. It boosts your immune system, strengthens adrenals, and increases the ability to think and remember.

Think of it as the fountain of youth in drops. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Remeber that you need to give it 8 weeks before you expect to see a significant difference.

You have heard of birds migrating.

You have heard of ducks migrating.

You have even heard of geese migrating…but migrating rocking chairs?

When we rock in the rocking chair here at the house it is likely to steathily try to transport the rockee into another room. Maybe it has had secret fantasies of being a portal to Narnia or maybe it is just possessed ..no clue.but it is very irritating!

To keep that from happening just glue pieces of weather stripping or run a line of hot glue down the rocker. The texture will keep the chair right where it is supposed to be without damaging your floor.

Rock on!

I have this really old book with lots of fantastic information in it..and some kind of add information. O.k.. A LOT of odd information!

One of the things that is suggests for finding slippers in the dark is to sew phosporescent buttons on them. I was thinking that was a great idea and then I thought about the glow in the dark fabric paints!

If you have ever fumbled in the dark..feeling frostbite crawing up your legs while you looked for your slippers or socks then what a great idea this is! A little bit of glow in the dark paint and voila! Slippers that are easy to find in the middle of the night.

I have to tell you this story..it sort of ties in.

We have racoons really bad. And we have chickens. We have to lock the chickens up at sundown or else they are likely to be raccoon bait. A few nights ago we got busy and forgot about the chickens until it was very dark. Marc and Ethan ran outside wiht flashlights, counted chickens and locked them up.

“We had all of them” Marc said.

About 4:30 a.m. I heard a chicken…it was an odd sound (I am a very light sleeper). I sat up thinking that a chicken had laid an egg in the coop in the middle of the night…then the chicken sounded a little stressed.

I leaped out of bed and could not find my shoes or anything else. I ran down the stairs and out the back door, forgetting that we had to remove the wood porch in the back and had not put it back up yet..our house is a good 3 -4 feet above the ground level. I flipped on the ligh, flung open the door yelling like a mad woman, bare feet and not much on, it is 34 degrees and I go flying LITERALLY through space as I bound through the doorand drop 3 feet. I am still yelling (Marc is a heavy sleeper) and the racoon takes one wide eyed look at me..drops the chicken and runs like a bobcat is after him. By now I am in the chicken pen…holding a panting chicken, half naked, and I suddenly realize that although it hasn’t rained the gound under my barefeet feels strangely …squishy. Ewwww. I am holding the chicken against me as I try to unlock the coop with one hand…and when I finally get it open our very agressive rooster tries to kick me as I put the hen in. I slowly turn back to the house, trying not to think about the feeling on my feet..and I suddenly remember that somehow I have to heft my body up onto the floor of the laundry room…because there are no stairs to the back door remember.

Good times, no?

The only thing that would have made it worse was if our neighbor had heard the noise and come to the fence with a spotlight.

It is bad anytime but when the china is vintage or special in some way it is…awful. If you keep china cement on hand it is often dried up and unusable when you need it..since you don’t tend to use it every day.

Well, here is an OLD OLD recipe for homemade china cement. Give it a try and see what you think. There is no better way to fix vintage china than with vontage cement, right?

You just mix gum arabic (available at art supply stores and other places) with enough plaster of paris to create a thick, syrupy stuff. Rub that on both sides of the break and press together. Hold for a few secons and then let set completely for about 24 hours.

There…Good as new. And if it is too broken for fixing you can always make a mosiac out of it, right?

Outside my Window…Overcast..chilly I wonder if we will be getting rain later? I think it is in the forecast. While dull, rainy days may seem depressing to some, where we live it is something like the first snow! It means that the hot dry season is over and Christmas is on its way.

I am thinking…That I am tired and ready to move to the next thing.

From the learning rooms…Long vacation starts now. From now until January we are on extended break.

I am thankful for…Answers to prayer, even when I have trouble believing.

From the kitchen…Thanksgiving preparations under way!

I am wearing…Green sweater under a black knitted jumper.

I am reading…Vintage cookbooks

I am hoping…We get Marc’s disability soon..still no word.

I am creating…a red knitted scarf for…..ME!

I am hearing…The wind blowing through the trees, the computer…muffled family sounds.

We have five boys and three girls. In the past 27 years of being parents we decided that diaper changes (even the volcanic, nuclear ones) were easier to deal with than the stinky shoes of a teenage boy.

If you have one of these in the house, or even more, rest assured that the situation can be dealt with without calling in a professional.

Buy some organic muslin and sew a small, drawstring bag about 2 inches x 3 inches.Fill it with baking soda. Add the following:

2 drops tea tree essential oil

3 drops eucalyptus essential oil

3 drops pine essential oil

2 drops lavender essential oil

Now, place the bag in a shoe. Refresh the scent as needed. Less chance of athletes foot, and the shoe odor will not make the neighbors complain.
