Welcome to Simply Home Remedies!

Home remedies have been a carefully passed down from mother to daughter throughout the generations. In the days before commercially available products like medicines and cleaning supplies it was imperative that a homemaker know how to make whatever her family needed in any circumstance. From cough medicine to glass cleaner; from lye soap to homemade dye she was an expert at the art of household alchemy.

During the post World War II boom years grandmother’s concoctions were cast aside in favor of the new, “modern” chemicals and methods. The old ways were labeled old fashioned, old wives tales, and un-hygienic.

We began taking in toxins at an alarming rate: in our foods, our medicines, and even in the air we breathe. Things like Lysol, Clorox, and anti-bacterial soap charmed us with their promises of the eradication of disease and dirt, and the ability to have the whitest laundry on the block. We fell for it hook, line and sinker, and clamored for more.

Something happened on the way to our sparkling, bacteria-free Nirvana. The over-use of anti-bacterial agents created a race of super bacteria that scoff at nearly everything. Our immune systems began to shut down, and auto-immune diseases began to spring up. Who knew that a little dirt was good for you? Grandmother did!

In the past twenty or so years there has been a new interest in these home remedies. People have become more concerned about the effects of chemicals on the environment and on their bodies, and they eschew a dependence on corporate America. They are turning toward grandmother’s recipes, her concoctions and her common sense. Not only are these things effective, they are frugal!

As you can see this is one of my passions. For the past 20 years or so my family has lived without the assistance of commercial medicines or doctors, except for things like broken arms and emergency surgeries on retro-pharyngeal abscesses. You know, the stuff I can’t butterfly bandage, make a tea for, or put a poultice on! Six of our eight children have been born at home. My nickname around here is Dr.Mom, Medicine Woman.

I routinely make my own cleaning products, wool dyes, cosmetics, and medicines, and I am excited at the opportunity to share this information with you. Grab a cookie and a cup of tea and settle in for a visit. You are welcome anytime!

Blessings!
Marye
